The padding on the back of the bag, I believe, helped protect my spine (there were a few items crushed in the backpack so I know the car went over me at some point). At the end of June 2018, I unintentionally stress tested this bag. I had bought this bag at the end of October 2017 and wore it almost every day to and from work. The only damage, at all, to the bag was a puncture wound on the front of the bag. Always in great shape and worked really well for me. At the end of June this year I was walking in a crosswalk and I was hit an run over by a car. I was also able to comfortably lean on it after the accident while I was waiting for the ambulance. I was also dragged under the car. Obviously, this probably (at least I hope) won't likely happen to someone else, but I am probably the best person to speak to the quality of this bag and needless to say, highly recommend it. Fortunately, I didn't have life threating injuries, but it was pretty bad. I truly believe this bag helped protect me.
