I ended up using carabiners to hook them on the front just to make it easier. Great starter pack. Only complaint I have is both my boyfriend and I took Nalgenes and they were a little hard to put into the side pockets. I was able to fit a lot of stuff in here and it has so many pockets. We took enough stuff for 5 days and 4 nights and still had room left in the packs. I am 5’3 and 110 lbs, I adjusted the pack to the smallest size on the back height and the waist straps and it fit me perfectly, but if I was any smaller it would’ve probably been too big. One side pocket on my boyfriends ripped a little. My boyfriend had this same pack and he is 6’0 and 170 lbs. He adjusted it to the large back size and it was perfect on him as well.
